OUR GLOBAL FAMILY

Our garments wouldn't exist if it weren't for the passion and dedication from our partners around the world.

We've always asked our global partners to abide by a strict code of conduct (below), outlining things like health and safety, paying our makers above the legal wage, fair working hours, voluntary overtime always being compensated at premium rate, never any child labour etc, but we are proud that in addition to this, our suppliers are independently certified.

Spell Meet The Makers

We utilise independent certification standards and programs to verify social compliance and drive ethical change.

A TOUR OF OUR GARMENT FACTORIES

We have highlighted 13 of our 15 Tier 1 Suppliers, our Tier 2 Printer and one of our Organic Cotton Farms.

SPOTLIGHT ON

Our Botanical Partner

We've always asked our global partners to abide by a strict code of conduct (below), outlining things like health and safety, paying our makers above the legal wage, fair working hours, voluntary overtime always being compensated at premium rate, never any child labour etc, but we are proud that in addition to this, our suppliers are independently audited against various globally recognised best practice standards and programs.

WORKING HOURS

Hours of work shall comply with applicable laws and industry standards. Overtime shall be voluntary, shall not exceed 12 hours per week, shall not be demanded on a regular basis and shall always be compensated at a premium rate.

NON-DISCRIMINATION

Recruitment, wage policy, admittance to training programs, employee promotion policy, policies of employment termination, retirement, and any other aspect of the employment relationship shall be based on the principle of equal opportunities, regardless of race, colour, sex, religion, political affiliation, union membership, nationality, social origin, deficiencies or handicaps.

WAGES

Wages and benefits paid for a standard working week shall meet at least legal or industry minimum standards and always be sufficient to meet basic needs of workers and their families and to provide some discretionary income.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

A safe and hygienic working environment shall be provided, and best occupational health and safety practice shall be promoted, bearing in mind the prevailing knowledge of the industry and of any specific hazards. Appropriate attention shall be paid to occupational hazards specific to this branch of the industry and assure that a safe and hygienic work environment is provided for. Effective regulations shall be implemented to prevent accidents and minimise health risks as much as possible

INVOLUNTARY LABOUR

There shall be no use of forced, including bonded or prison, labour.

LEGALLY BINDING

Obligations to employees under labour or social security laws and regulations arising from the regular employment relationship shall not be avoided through the use of labour-only contracting arrangements, or through apprenticeship schemes where there is no real intent to impart skills or provide regular employment. Younger workers shall be given the opportunity to participate in education and training programs.

BRIBERY AND CORRUPTION

Spell does not tolerate any bribery within its supply chain. A bribe includes financial or other advantages which are given, promised, offered, accepted, requested or received with the intention to influence the ability to make objective and fair business decisions.

ENVIRONMENT

We choose to work with businesses who share our commitment to sustainability and preservation of the environment. We ask our suppliers to choose leading technologies that reduce the environmental impacts that their manufacturing has on the environment.

We expect (or are working with suppliers) to have systems and policies in place that examine resource, water and air footprints. It is compulsory that suppliers comply with all applicable environmental laws in the country of business. In addition, we expect businesses to promote initiatives that promote environmental responsibility.

COMMUNITY

Born and raised in Byron, the idea of community is at the heart of Spell. We align with suppliers who show commitment to their communities. Be it investment in education or local infrastructure, we work with our suppliers to be the leaders of social development in their local communities.

ANIMAL WELFARE

Garments or products produced from animal based raw materials must meet the highest ethical animal welfare standards and practices that focus on the OIE Five Freedoms. We strongly believe that animals are entitled to humane treatment and have the freedom to express normal behaviour. This must be achieved through implementation of good animal husbandry and becoming certified to selected animal welfare programs or initiatives where applicable.

More than just our word,

We use independent certification bodies to conduct audits against globally recognised best practice social & environmental standards and programs (SA8000, SMETA, Fairtrade, WRAP, GOTS, BSCI) to ensure that our suppliers are producing a socially & environmentally responsible manner as set out by our Code Of Conduct.

If our supplier is unable to provide us with evidence of them meeting our standards, they have the opportunity to be independently audited to our Code Of Conduct. An accredited certification body will conduct the audit if this is necessary.

In relation to living wage, this is an incredibly complex area particularly when you don’t have a vertically integrated supply chain (i.e. when you don’t own your own factory). We are utilising audit methodologies such as SMETA and certification standards such as SA8000 to ensure the equivalent of a living wage is paid, however so far only 2 of our tier 1 suppliers are verified to the benchmark of living wage certification (SA8000), and an additional 5 are audited against the SMETA methodology which includes living wage benchmark assessments.

An important aspect of our sustainability journey is accountability and transparency. We have a supplier list with contact details and addresses available upon request specifically for NGO’s.
